Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Mental health issues remain a significant challenge in many communities, including Wurno Local Government Area in Sokoto State. However, stigma surrounding mental health has perpetuated misconceptions and reluctance to seek help. Media, as a powerful tool for shaping public opinion and behavior, can play a vital role in reducing the stigma associated with mental health. Television programs, radio broadcasts, and social media campaigns have been used in many parts of the world to challenge the negative stereotypes and taboos around mental health, fostering a more supportive environment for those affected. In Wurno, the role of local media in educating the public and changing attitudes toward mental health has not been sufficiently explored. This study seeks to examine how media outlets in the area have contributed to reducing mental health stigma and promoting a more open and supportive dialogue about mental health issues.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Mental health stigma in Wurno has led to the marginalization and discrimination of individuals with mental health conditions, discouraging them from seeking help or treatment. The portrayal of mental health issues in the media often perpetuates negative stereotypes, contributing to public fear and misunderstanding. Despite the availability of health education programs and media interventions, stigma continues to persist. It is essential to assess how media, particularly local media, can be utilized more effectively to challenge these stigmas and promote mental well-being. This study aims to explore how media in Wurno can be leveraged to reduce stigma, raise awareness, and change public perceptions about mental health.
